Recruiter Spotlight: Kenny Vaughan

From time to time, we like to showcase some of the talented people we have placed in great positions here in Ireland. The success stories about highly skilled professionals such as Warren Wolff and Alain Moghabghab

But what about the people who helped them find their new roles? 

As you may have guessed from the title, we’ve decided to run a little series introducing the superstar recruiters we have here at Software Placements, and trust us, they really are superstars. 

First up in the series is our Senior Recruitment Consultant Kenny Vaughan who specialises in PHP, Python & UI/Frontend/JavaScript roles. 

So Kenny, have you always been in the recruitment industry? 

Before I started working for Software Placements I worked in retail management. I actually spent the majority of my early career in the retail industry. 

What brought you into the world of recruitment?

As you know, I worked with you (Michéal) in Vodafone about 20 years ago. As fate would have it, you reached out to me about joining Software Placements at the exact moment when I was considering a career change. 

I then met with both you and co-director Michael. We discussed the role, the company, and of course, the recruitment industry. The meeting left me feeling incredibly positive about the company and excited about the opportunity to get involved. 

Was it a tough transition? 

It took quite a lot of hard work but I immersed myself in the IT industry and learned as much as I could about the technologies involved and the huge variety of roles in the sector. I really threw myself into it and I haven’t looked back. 

What is it that you love about your role so much?

There are many things to love about working in recruitment but the big one for me is the fact that no two days are the same. 

I could spend one day learning all about a company and the roles they have available and then spend the next day chatting with developers and getting to know them. This is particularly interesting as we source professionals from all over the world. 

You see, monotony and boredom are two words that simply don’t exist in my role and that’s something I’m forever grateful for. 

What does a typical day look like for you? 

As I said, no two are the same so it’s really tough to single out one thing that I do on a daily basis. However, if I had to describe my typical day I would say that it’s all about sourcing. 

Whether I’m looking for the right candidate for a client or vice versa, it’s all sourcing. And that’s what allows me to make those perfect matches. 

Is it a tough job? 

You always want to find the right role for a candidate or help a company find their next rock star employee. So there’s that element of pressure you put on yourself to over-deliver at all times. 

Yes we work really hard in the office, but thankfully I work with a wonderful group of people, and we’ve found a balance that keeps stress to a minimum. There’s a great work culture here and I’m lucky to be a part of it. 

What kind of advice would you give candidates looking to make a career move to Ireland?

When I help candidates prepare for their big move, I always like to provide them with as much information as possible. Everything from info on public transport to where they can spend their downtime. 

It’s essential that someone moving to Dublin or anywhere in Ireland, takes all of this on board and uses it. They really should take it upon themselves to learn as much as they can about their new home before they arrive. Doing their homework (and using the info I give them) will help them settle down much quicker. 

In fact, with Dublin now having a real international or cosmopolitan feel about it, there’s a good chance that a candidate may actually know someone living here. Reach out and ask if anyone knows someone here and you could get some great advice and tips from someone who has been there and done that. As I like to say to all the candidates I help make their big move; forewarned is forearmed.
